Today we talked about the social structures of First Nation people and there community’s we also learned about justice and conflicts, extended families, clans, community size, elders, education, and gender roles.
Justice and conflicts
The First Nations justice system is a lot different then are’s today, unlike are’s it’s more baced on rehab instead of punishment. If some one committed a murder it was the community’s responsibility and they would think of the best outcome for the community, and the person that committed the murder would speak to the elders to see what is out of balance in the wheel, then the person might into the wilderness rather by him self of with a elder.
Elders
an elder was a respected person with great knowledge. they didn't need to be elderly but most of them were. these people were highly respected and many people wanted their counseling.
education
children learned by doing things in the community and the education was very informal. it was more just a kid wondering around and trying different thing like hunting and if they didn't they could do something they liked.
gender roles
in the community the men would usually hunt for food in big groups and they would also defend there tribes. the men would also do most business for there tribe. the women would traditionally organize jobs they also prepared the game the men brought back and they would also plaint crops
community size
there community size was based on the resource they had this usually changed in winter time. in the summer they would come together to hunt bison and in the winter they would go in to smaller groups
clans
these clans all shared a common ancestor or banded together because of geography sometimes theses clans fallowed their paternal line
extended families
every one in a family would live together aunts uncles grandparents cousins and they all worked together.
Quote’s
"Native theology works in a different way. There is no heaven, there is no hell, there's just a circle. The circle of life and death that interconnect, and that when we pass away, we leave this planet, we don't go up or down. We stay [in] another part of the circle." --Tomson Highway, musician, storyteller, eternal optimist
“We were not perfect, but we had no jails, we had no taxes…no wine and no beer, no old peoples’ homes, no children’s aid society, we had no crisis centres. We had a philosophy of life based on the Creator. We had our humanity.”

Good job Rock. I would say for next time maybe add more detail to whatever it is you are talking about. For example you could have said for justice and conflict how the entire village is involved in major decision making. If the crime is that serious. You could also have mentioned that the elders talk to the ones who committed the crime to try and bring back balance in their lives and restore harmony. Next for the gender roles you didn’t mention anything about the women’s roles with the community. Or how if the women wants to do a mans job or viscera they are able to. You could have also went into more detail about how the clans are made. For example you could have expanded on the idea of maternal and paternal line. Another thing for the clans you could say how they would split during the winter to accommodate the resource amounts. Then during the summer they would have gotten back together because then everyone would have jobs to do. You could take a look at Kenzies blog post she explained herself in an amazing way. https://canadianhistorytoldbyus.blogspot.ca/2017/09/in-todays-news_25.html?m=0#links
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful blog post rock. i enjoyed reading it and i learnt some information but you were also missing some smh. when i say you can add information i mean you need to explain yourself better. your not letting the readers know all the information about the topic youre posting about. you're just laying down the basics. a big mistake on your part i noticed is that in the gender roles topic you didn't add anything about the females in the colony. you should take a look at other students blogs to find more information to add to yours! love carson
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon rock : ) I really like your blog post. I like the justice and conflict portion for the reason that you stated the differences on the justice system back then compared to now, and how they dealt with it back then, I like the education portion because you state how informal it is. I wish you would've added more information on community size for the fact that what ways and issues cause the community to grow or shrink in size. I also wish there was more information on elders example what are there main jobs? I wish you would've went into more detail explaining the information, and I also wish there was more information about each topic, example how when a crime is committed they try to bring peace and order back without violence. You have a lot of good information and I really like the blog.. Yours truly... Stevan Burris
